In 1969, riding the wave of the Pan-African Festival in Algiers, drummer Sunny Murray orchestrated an exceptional studio session in Paris. Assembling legendary avant-garde voices—Archie Shepp, Roscoe Mitchell, Jeanne Lee, Lester Bowie, and Grachan Moncur III—he created an album that became a manifesto of spiritual jazz.
Hommage To Africa is not merely a musical work but a sonic ritual, where free improvisation, African consciousness, and poetic revelation merge into a single hypnotic whole. The album's two central compositions—"Suns Of Africa" and "R.I.P."—unfold as meditative journeys, suffused with ceremonial energy and profound emotional resonance.
The album emerged at a critical moment of cultural awakening, when Black American musicians were actively reinterpreting their heritage. Hommage To Africa decisively rejects colonial logic, rewriting the narrative: Africa ceases to be exotic backdrop and becomes a living source, spiritual compass, and the sole true future.
