"The Pope Smokes Dope" (original release – 1972; digital reissue – 2015, Nibelung Records) is a controversial and provocative album by New York underground street musician and activist David Peel and his band The Lower East Side.

Musically, the album is extremely simple and acoustic: it consists of chanted songs accompanied by acoustic guitars, percussion, whistles, harmonica, and a boisterous choral chant "from the street." The sound lacks complex arrangements, yet its energy, rawness, and rebellious spirit made the album one of the harbingers of the punk rock movement.

The 2015 reissue includes the original album and bonus tracks, including classic Peel street anthems ("I Like Marijuana").
