Cristiano Calcagnile – Multikulti Cherry On (2016)

"Multikulti Cherry On" is an album by Italian drummer, percussionist, and composer Cristiano Calcagnile and his ensemble Multikulti, released on June 1, 2016, on Caligola Records.

The album is a profound, large-scale tribute to the outstanding American jazz cornetist, multi-instrumentalist, and ethno-jazz pioneer Don Cherry. The title of the project and album directly references Cherry's famous work "Multikulti" (1990). However, Calcagnile doesn't simply copy the originals; he reinterprets the work of Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Dudu Pukwana, and Terry Riley, incorporating their legacy into signature suites and layered arrangements. Musically, the album is incredibly rich in timbral colors and rhythmic contrasts. The sound combines the traditions of avant-garde New York free jazz, minimalism, African and Asian ethnic percussion, brass improvisations, and free experimental exploration.
