Under its new director, Edzard Burchards, the Rheinische Kantorei presents one of those truly inspired—that is to say, spiritually enriched—albums that, with love and devotion, lift us out of the hustle and bustle of our modern lives. Using the venerable motet as an example, the ensemble tells the story of the Leipzig Thomaskantors, who, over the course of a good century and a half, strove to fulfill this renowned and demanding office to the best of their ability —beginning with Tobias Michael, who took up his post in 1631 in a ravaged land to duly praise the Lord, all the way to Johann Adam Hiller, the classical master, who assumed the position in the year of the French Revolution. Alongside them are several musicians whose hopes—more or less justified—were dashed, such as Johann Ludwig Krebs, the pupil of the preeminent Johann Sebastian Bach, to whom the program’s “Overture” is, of course, reserved: “Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt,” a pastiche in which some of the ideas of his friend Georg Philipp Telemann have been lost. You wouldn’t notice—for Love & Devotion is the common denominator that holds this world together at its very core.
