Doris Troy is an American R&B singer whose voice was shaped in church choirs and whose talent was championed by James Brown. Her life story inspired the autobiographical musical "Mama, I Want to Sing," and her name appears in the credits of albums by The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd — a testament to the respect she commanded among fellow musicians. Her debut album centers on her 1963 hit "Just One Look," which climbed to No. 3 on the R&B charts and reached the pop Top 10; the song was later covered by numerous artists, including Linda Ronstadt. Recorded with involvement from Apple Records, the label founded by The Beatles, the album is regarded as one of the most important records in soul music history, shaping the genre's later development — most notably through the pivotal track "M-3."
