British musician Robert Rotifer, known for his work with Louis Philippe & The Night Mail, Swansea Sound, and Papernut Cambridge, once asked his longtime acquaintance Kenji, formerly of Friedrich Sunlight, why he'd stopped singing in bands. That conversation became the seed of Radical Friendship Theory, a collaborative album that gradually drew in a wider circle of musicians: post-glam veteran John Howard, Vienna-based artist The Zew, punk icon Helen McCookerybook, and singing drummer Ian Button.

Rotifer wrote the songs specifically for Kenji's voice, and its natural qualities pulled the material toward a melodic baroque pop direction. Over time, a recurring theme emerged in the lyrics — friendship, mutual support, and reflection on the state of the world. Home demos recorded in keys unfamiliar to the writers eventually grew into full studio arrangements. Every participant sings lead on at least one track and adds harmonies throughout, making the record's collaborative spirit not just a concept but a literal method of its creation.

The album brings together musicians based in Glasgow, Kent, London, Berlin, and southern Spain, spanning a wide stylistic range — from baroque pop and psychedelia to country rock and bookish indie. At its core, it's a statement about the value of genuine human friendship and creative collaboration as a counterweight to a world of hollow digital connection, captive consumerism, and artificially stoked division. All tracks were written by Robert Rotifer, except "Across The Great Divide," penned by Kate Wolf.
