Max Devereaux (1994–) is a Minneapolis-based composer and guitarist, a cross-disciplinary artist who works in video, painting, and even ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement). He has built his unique creative activities through continuous output based on intuition, improvisation, and process-based approaches, and has a distinctive presence in the contemporary American avant-garde scene. His releases, which sit at the intersection of contemporary music, electroacoustics, and sound studies, have exceeded 100 from labels in various countries, including Japan, and he has collaborated with Japanese improvisational and avant-garde musicians such as Hiromichi Sakamoto, Shoji Hano, and Ryuichi Yoshida. This work, Resistance, was composed in 2026 and realized through Devereaux's own guitar solo performance. It is a speculative and penetrating sound work that emphasizes not the narrative aspect of music, but the method of articulation, sustained attention, and the materiality of time. The graphic notation for unspecified instruments or ensembles maintains the individual intensity and identity of the work while simultaneously opening up the possibility of solidarity and variation that transcends division.
