Les Paul - The New Sound! (1955)

In 1945, following a successful collaboration with Bing Crosby and a celebrated guitar solo on the hit single "It's Been a Long, Long Time," guitarist and innovator Les Paul set out to create a signature sound that would transform pop and jazz. The turning point came in 1946 when Les Paul's mother mistook an imitator on the radio for her own son. Realizing he was losing his distinct musical identity, Les Paul built a home garage studio dedicated to crafting an undeniable personal aesthetic.

Alongside his wife, singer Mary Ford, he pioneered game-changing recording techniques. By positioning the microphone unusually close to Mary Ford's voice, they achieved a warmer, more intimate tone. They also introduced multi-track overdubbing, enabling Mary Ford to harmonize with her own pre-recorded vocals. Combined with Les Paul's experiments with echo, delay, phasing, the development of the Gibson Les Paul solid-body electric guitar, and early multi-track recorders, their breezy jazz arrangements became a major commercial phenomenon. Their breakthrough single, a cover of "How High the Moon" featuring 24 tracks of overdubbed guitars and vocals, spent nine weeks at number one in 1951, paving the way for over twenty gold records.
