Helen Grayco - The Lady In Red (1958)

Singer Helen Grayco, trained in jazz modal vocal technique in her early years, recorded a little-known but rewarding vocal album for the Verve label in the 1950s. Her style here is mature and emphatically feminine: beneath a composed surface lies a sensual, almost daring undertone, recalling the heroines of classic Hollywood films — echoing the reddish, passionate palette of the cover. The arrangers are uncredited, yet the orchestrations are of a high standard: many numbers feature light Latin and exotic touches that heighten the seductive atmosphere and serve as an effective backdrop for her voice. The repertoire includes “Perfida”, “The Moon Was Yellow”, “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas”, “Them There Eyes”, “The Hour Of Parting/The Lady In Red”, “Besame Mucho”, and “Temptation”.
