Picchio Dal Pozzo - Pic nic@Valdapozzo (2004)

Pic nic@Valdapozzo is a live/studio concept album by the legendary Italian avant-garde and prog rock band Picchio Dal Pozzo, released in 2004 on Cuneiform Records.

The album is a shining example of RIO and the Italian Canterbury scene (reminiscent of Soft Machine, Matching Mole, Henry Cow, and Frank Zappa). The music is rich in electroacoustic experiments, avant-garde jazz improvisations, absurdist poetry, samples, brass instruments, and vintage keyboards.

Picchio Dal Pozzo was one of the most original and experimental bands of Italian progressive rock of the 1970s. After a long hiatus, the band members have reunited to create this unique project.

The recording is based on material captured during a series of live performances and studio sessions. The musicians combined live improvisations with prepared electronic collages and musique concrète.

Unlike standard prog albums, this album places a strong emphasis on sound, field recordings, and complex polyrhythms, while maintaining the signature Canterbury irony and melody.
