Shonen Knife - Let's Knife Re-Cut (2026) [Hi-Res]

Japanese punk band Shonen Knife, formed in Osaka in 1981 by sisters Naoko and Atsuko Yamano, evolved from self-released cassette tapes to achieving cult status within the international indie scene. By the late 1980s, the group had earned the admiration of prominent Western artists like Sonic Youth, L7, and Kurt Cobain, who invited the trio on tour with Nirvana. This recognition led to major-label deals with MCA, Creation, and SBK/ERG, resulting in the 1992 release of Let's Knife—a slick studio re-recording of their early Japanese-language catalog translated into English.

Prompted by Let's Knife remaining out of print and unavailable on streaming services for decades, Shonen Knife (now featuring drummer Risa Kawano alongside the Yamano sisters) returned to the studio to record Let's Knife Re-Cut. The project bridges the raw, naive energy of their original Japanese releases with the polished accessibility of their major-label era, backed by over three decades of live performance experience. The updated album showcases a more muscular and confident delivery, striking a balance between heavy pop punk energy inspired by the Ramones and classic girl group melodicism.
