"Lay of Leithian" (2009) is the third concept studio album by the Italian progressive rock/symphonic rock band Ainur, released by Electromantic Music.
The Italian project Ainur is known for its focused musical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. The album "Lay of Leithian" is entirely dedicated to one of the most central and dramatic epic stories of Middle-earth from The Silmarillion—the epic love story of the mortal man Beren and the elven maiden Lúthien Tinúviel, as well as their perilous quest to retrieve the Silmaril from Morgoth's iron fortress.
The album's sound is expansive and theatrical: the band combines rock instruments (electric guitar, bass, drums) with full orchestral arrangements, acoustic folk instruments (flutes, violins, cellos), and choral parts. Numerous vocalists perform the roles of specific characters (Beren, Lúthien, Thingol, Finrod, Sauron, Morgoth), transforming the album into a veritable rock opera.
