In 2013, 20-year-old Brazilian film student Rubel recorded seven intimate songs in a makeshift home studio using rented gear while studying in Austin, Texas. Inspired by the local DIY music scene, the album Pearl blended MPB, folk, pop, and indie as a humble keepsake of his youth and experiences. After uploading the tracks to YouTube, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a film career with no commercial expectations.

However, the release unexpectedly turned into a viral phenomenon in Brazil. The centerpiece seven-minute single "Quando Bate Aquela Saudade" garnered over 85 million views and evolved into a national anthem. This organic success triggered physical pressings in Brazil, drew Rubel back to Rio de Janeiro, and charted his path toward stardom. The record's organic soundscape rests on a delicate singer-songwriter framework featuring acoustic guitar, banjo, accordion, and warm vocal harmonies, evoking the quiet minimalism of Thom Yorke and the tender balladry of Caetano Veloso.
