At the turn of the 1970s, the international pop and rock landscape expanded far beyond the UK and the US, bringing the West German underground scene into the global spotlight. The German branch of Liberty/UA (Liberty/UA, Germany) gathered key representatives of the local experimental movement, proving that the country could produce world-class original music. Leading this wave were the psychedelic collective Amon Düül II, whose records were released in the US, the UK, France, and Japan; the Swiss-German band Krokodil, a standout act at European festivals; experimental krautrock pioneers Can, who became sought-after creators of underground movie soundtracks; and The Petards, who established dedicated fan bases in France and the Netherlands. This compilation shatters the long-held cliché that groundbreaking underground music could not emerge from Germany.
