Buck Curran - The Long Distance (2023)

An album of intense, introspective analog synthesizer ambient music, reminiscent of the cinematic works of Popol Vuh and the films of Werner Herzog and Ridley Scott, was created during an intense 18-hour recording session. The musical narrative weaves together personal and family history: Scottish-Irish heritage, memories of a suddenly passed grandmother Florence Curran, childhood in the Detroit neighborhood of Hazel Park, and the military service of the creator's father and uncles during the Vietnam War. Specific tracks, built upon a combination of acoustic guitar and layered synthesizers, capture warm moments spent with daughter Lucia. Track titles like "May Morning", "Quang Tri Province", and "The Fall of Saigon" reflect a geography of memory and historical context. The release is dedicated to members of the Curran family, loved ones, and the film directors whose vision inspired the project.
