In 1932, young physician Meg Laurel, a recent graduate of Harvard Medical School, faces intense pressure from a corrupt judge in Boston and decides to temporarily leave the city. She travels to the remote community of Eagle's Nest, nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, to visit her childhood friend Effie at the orphanage where they were raised. Upon arrival, Meg discovers the orphanage closed and Effie on her deathbed under the care of a local traditional healer, Granny Arrowroot. Despite her advanced scientific background, Meg is unable to save her friend. Honoring Effie's final wish, Meg chooses to stay in the mountain settlement to provide medical care to its residents. The collision between modern medicine and traditional healing initially sparks hostility between Meg and Granny Arrowroot, but their mutual dedication eventually fosters compromise and shared learning.
