The third volume of Hisham Mayet’s (Hisham Mayet) ethnomusicological anthology, compiled from field recording expeditions across Burkina Faso between 2013 and 2015, highlights a sacred and celebratory audio tapestry from the Dioula and Fulani peoples alongside secluded ritual societies. A central focus is placed on the ceremonial chants of the Donso hunters—an animist brotherhood in western Burkina Faso—who utilize the Donso ngoni stringed harp as a protective totem and conduit of spiritual strength. The Dioula tradition is showcased through the Bobo-Dioulasso ensemble Fassobolomba, blending ancient folklore with contemporary melodic songcraft. The sonic range is further expanded by the meditative acoustic textures of the thianhou reed zither and the jubilant Denke-Denke wedding songs of the Fulani people, delivering a rich overview of authentic African folk and world music.
