Mary Jane Leach - Pipe Dreams II (2026) [Hi-Res]

Composer and New York Downtown avant-garde figure Mary Jane Leach delivers the follow-up to her seminal 1989 work Pipe Dreams, further exploring the psychoacoustic properties and physical resonance of the pipe organ. The new release features two side-long compositions recorded during live performances in Belgium and Germany.

Mary Jane Leach's artistic approach was shaped by childhood memories of church acoustics and early sound experimentation. In the late 1980s, she developed her technique using the organ at St. Peter’s Church in Cologne, leveraging its spatial pipe layout to craft distinct Minimalism and Avant-Garde soundscapes. For Pipe Dreams II (2023) and Pipe Dreams III (2024), Leach moved away from traditional notation toward real-time stop modulation and structured improvisation. She constructs these pieces around the physical behavior of sound itself, timing entries and intervals by listening to microtonal beating patterns and acoustic frequencies rather than relying on a traditional time signature.
