The Pretenders - The Isle of View (Live) (1995)

Isle of View is an acoustic, unplugged-style record by Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders, on which the singer reworks 15 songs from the band's catalog, ranging from well-known hits like "Back on the Chain Gang" to more obscure tracks such as "Lovers of Today." Several songs are arranged for a string quartet, an experiment with mixed results — most notably on "Kid," where a drastic rearrangement comes across as poorly conceived. A more successful moment comes from the collaboration with Damon Albarn of Blur, whose piano work on "I Go to Sleep" leaves a stronger impression than the string arrangements elsewhere on the album. Overall, the record is regarded as one of the weaker entries in The Pretenders' discography: none of the reinterpretations here surpass the original studio versions, leaving the album feeling more like a minor addendum than a substantial artistic statement.
