When playing Schumann, I sometimes enter a state of pseudo-consciousness. I feel I'm in a lucid daydream. I recall life experiences triggered by harmonies or melodies only a mind like Schumann's could create. I might cry or suddenly experience chills. After so many years with this music, I am certain that Schumann meant for us to detect this dimension. In such moments, new options about sound and timing occur to me. I play in the here and now even if I had not practiced that way. Spontaneity overtakes everything. While recording this album, I took risks again and again: when spontaneity asked me to override versions ingrained over decades, I obeyed. It was worth it. On this album, you will hear playing that is spontaneous and in the moment. At times it may surprise you. But I want you to experience listening to Schumann as he decodes life: without prejudgment in full awareness of feelings. After a few listenings, you will discern each note’s purpose in conveying a deeper message. Being in the moment with a Schumann masterpiece is a musical encounter like no other. I hope it is worth it for you as well.
