British producer, sound engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Catto, best known as the co-founder of The Heliocentrics, has spent two decades shaping the sound of underground contemporary music from his analogue-driven East London recording space, Quatermass Sound Lab. Championing vintage valve equipment, live tracking, and an instinctual mix of psychedelic rock, jazz, funk, hip-hop, punk, and electronic music, he has cultivated a collaborative environment that drew innovators such as Yussef Dayes, Madlib, DJ Shadow, Mulatu Astatke, Orlando Julius, and Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids.

The archive compilation Quatermass Sound Lab, issued by Strut, opens the vault to Catto's unreleased recordings, alternate mixes, and rarities. The collection spans abrasive post-punk electronics by Snapped Ankles, experimental French hip-hop by Wet Enough, intricate psychedelic pop by Vanishing Twin, spiritual jazz by Divine Earth, alongside contributions from Venezuelan futurists Insólito Universo, Swiss afrobeat outfit Professor Wouassa, and UK group Toyface. The release stands as an essential document showcasing Catto as a key architect of modern analogue production.
