VA - SoulShaker Vol. 3 (2006)

The third installment of the compilation series from the Italian independent label Record Kicks is dedicated to the contemporary deep funk and soul scene. This time, it gathers artists who in the mid-2000s were actively shaping the new modern funk movement, deliberately channeling the sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The compilation features The Bamboos, Breakestra, Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Budos Band, The Sweet Vandals, The Poets Of Rhythm, Link Quartet, Soul Snatchers, and other acts. Record Kicks itself described this release as a blend of contemporary deep funk heavily influenced by The J.B.'s and The Meters; in fact, many of the tracks genuinely sound like long-lost, forgotten singles from the classic funk era. Particularly noteworthy is "Pushin' On" by Quantic Soul Orchestra feat. Alice Russell, which later became one of the most iconic anthems of this scene, as well as the Kenny Dope remix of Gary Davis's "Gotta Get Your Love". Alice Russell's vocals also appear on the opening track by The Bamboos.
