Electric Light Orchestra – Secret Messages & A New World Record (1988)

Released in 1988, the double release Secret Messages & A New World Record brought together two iconic ELO albums from different eras of the band's career under one cover. The first half of the set contains A New World Record (1976), the pinnacle of ELO's classic period, capturing the band's transition from pure symphonic rock to grandiose art pop with perfect string arrangements and mega-hits like "Telephone Line" and "Livin' Thing." The second half features Secret Messages (1983), a later, futuristic work in which classic strings gave way to complex analog synthesizers, drum machines, reverse tape (vocoders and conceptual "backward" messages), and the new wave aesthetic of the 1980s.
