Albert Ammons - The First Day (1992)

In December 1938, the "Spirituals to Swing" concert organized by John Hammond in New York introduced pianist virtuosos Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis to a broader audience. The performance made a profound impression on music producer Alfred Lion, prompting him to launch the iconic Blue Note Records label just two weeks later. During the newly formed company's very first single-day recording session, the two musicians laid down a series of solo tracks in the boogie-woogie and piano blues styles, along with energetic piano duets such as "Nagasaki." The material captured during that historic session showcased Ammons' forceful playing style and Lewis's compositional talent, establishing the foundation of the Blue Note catalog and preserving a pivotal moment in the evolution of American jazz and swing.
