Jarrett Gilgore & Anthony Pirog - Between The Earth and Where (2026) [Hi-Res]

The initial rehearsal meeting between saxophonist Jarrett Gilgore and guitarist Anthony Pirog in Baltimore quickly evolved into an intuitive creative partnership rooted in the vibrant experimental scene of the Baltimore–Washington D.C. corridor. Combining Gilgore's conservatory training with Pirog's established reputation as a versatile guitar virtuoso, the duo found common artistic ground in midcentury jazz ballads, film scores, and the ethereal compositions of Icelandic bassist Skúli Sverrisson.

Their collaborative album Between The Earth and Where serves as an intimate reflection of their musical empathy and technique. Moving away from sprawling free improvisation to focus on melodic structure and sophisticated songwriting, the duo crafted a series of concise pieces balancing a serene, ambient atmosphere with deep emotional depth.

Co-produced and recorded in part by Brendan Canty (Fugazi, The Messthetics), the album blends studio sessions, live performances at the D.C. DIY venue Rhizome, and remote pandemic-era recordings. Mixed by Nate Mendelsohn, the collection ranges from the poignant melancholy of "Soft Eyes" to the crystalline soundscapes of "Joyblaster I," delivering a cohesive statement in avant-garde and experimental music.
