Unbecoming is a collection of alt-country/folk/indie songs about identity, heartbreak, vulnerability, desire and finding your way back to yourself. At its centre is the title track, “Unbecome”, is a defiant reflection on patriarchy and the expectations placed on women and the process of unbecoming everything we were taught to be, including the parts of ourselves we learnt to perform in order to be loved. Across the album, Blue Ren explores toxic relationships, craving people we know aren't good for us, losing sight of our own worth, and the uncomfortable pull of desire that we know we shouldn't act on. In “Ghost”, that tension is allowed to simply exist, sitting with the craving without giving in to it. In the track Port Fairy the ocean becomes a place of healing and escape, while the songs ultimately move towards recognising our patterns, reclaiming our worth and learning to choose ourselves.
