Koen Holtkamp - Nightlife (2026) [Hi-Res]

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Koen Holtkamp, who has worked for more than two decades at the intersection of ambient, experimental, and electroacoustic music, and is known as a member of the duo Mountains as well as for his solo work, has released the album Nightlife, shaped by his move from Brooklyn to New York's rural Hudson Valley. Living amid nature at a slower pace pushed him away from a fixed outcome and toward experimentation and play: a new instrument grew out of his modular system, built on physical modeling that emulates plucked string sounds. Holtkamp's love of acoustic traditions — guitar soli, the kora, and other chordophones — was translated into an electronic language, yielding music that feels tangible, warm, and intimate despite its synthetic nature.

Gradually the project became an imagined ensemble, composed with specific musicians in mind: drummer Greg Fox and saxophonist and flutist Matt Bauder, whose parts make the material more fluid and song-like, along with Ben Vida on synth bass. Although it sometimes resembles a band in motion, the music deliberately resists traditional cohesion: acoustic and electronic sources are each placed in their own environment, creating a hyper-dimensional space that is complex yet inviting, otherworldly yet entirely natural.

Most of the album was made during late-night sessions that became a personal ritual, which gave it its title. Nightlife unfolds as a series of finely detailed sonic environments in which stillness, texture, and subtle interplay take precedence over momentum. It is music for close listening, open and unforced, reflecting both a change in pace and a deepening of focus, and extending Holtkamp's ongoing interest in how sound shapes, and is shaped by, the spaces we inhabit.
