Patrones - Patrones (2026) [Hi-Res]

Peruvian musician, DJ and producer Humberto Polar has launched a new project, Patrones, whose debut LP is released on Tenorio Cotobade and Sometimes Music. Its four pieces are built on Afro-Peruvian rhythmic patterns recorded in Lima by Amador (Chebo) Ballumbrosio, Roberto Ballumbrosio and Alfredo Valiente. Polar uses these recordings as a starting point for improvisational, free jazz interaction. The players are Carlos Icaza (drums, percussion), Yudith Rojas (trombone) and Mike Sandoval (double bass), while Polar adds guitar, Fender Rhodes, Yamaha YC-20 and electronics.

The album opens with “Patrones de Son de los Diablos,” a ritual dialogue between guitar, double bass and trombone whose harmonic framework leaves room for spontaneous conversational phrases. On “Patrones de Festejo,” the festive rhythm slows into an esoteric soundscape: electronic textures drift above an ominous bassline, recalling early-1970s jazz fusion. “Patrones de Yunza” interweaves Icaza’s drums with the original pattern recordings, and “Patrones de Landó” is built on a repetitive chant that forges a ritual connection to Afro-Peruvian and African traditions.

The rhythm tracks were recorded in Lima on March 8, 2020, and the sessions at Estudios Noviembre in Mexico City took place on October 12, 2022 (recorded by Gil Rabiela). Mixing is by Joaquín Pardo, mastering by Pablo López Ruiz, and the lacquer cut by Frank Merritt. Production is by Humberto Polar and Carlos Icaza, with artwork by Elisenda Estrems.
