In 2003, in the heart of New York’s jazz scene, tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, who spent half a century playing with Coltrane, Sharrock and many others, and cornetist Graham Haynes recorded duo material at the meeting point of modal jazz and dub. Years later the recording was given new life: Bill Laswell ran it through his illbient dub aesthetic, and it was released as a Sanders x Laswell session titled With a Heartbeat, on vinyl for the first time. The music is built around the human heartbeat: an unhurried, systolic subbass pulse opens the album and runs through it. Two long, panoramic pieces frame the record. The opener, Across Time, runs 17 minutes and rests on dusty illbient dub with a cool reserve. The closer, Gamaka, moves into near-big-beat “4th world” fusion landscapes reminiscent of the album eL-Hortobãgyi Hortator. Between them lie dives into Indian raga and tabla rhythms. In Morning Tala, Sanders and Haynes colour the spacious texture with a wide range of brass and woodwinds. In Alankara, Trilok Gurtu’s spicy, undulating tabla and scat vocals create a light, almost danceable effect that may work on the floors of open-minded clubs. Overall, this is music for floating at home or for a road trip on the astral highway, a slept-on work that should appeal to fans of Jon Hassell, Talvin Singh, Lászlo Hortobágyi and Material.
