Afro-Latin electronic producer, DJ and bassist for Little Simz Marla Kether has released her second EP, Luso, on Strut Records. The five tracks bring together African, Brazilian and UK influences: Batida with grime rapper Mez, Afrobeat with rapper Reek0, Broken Beat with Sofia Grant, and a Samba House anthem with Margaridas. The material was written and developed between Lisbon and Brasilia, and that movement between two cities and cultures largely shaped its character.Title: Luso

For Marla, who first recorded as a producer during lockdown, the main goal was to bring musicians into a single studio and capture the energy of live recording: the sound should feel warm, human and alive, built on rhythm, connection and joy. Live percussion, bass and vocals intertwine with electronic production, and the music is designed for clubs, headphones and festival stages alike. It draws together Brazilian traditions, Broken Beat, Afro-Portuguese Batida, Afrobeat and jazz-inflected club sound.
Luso is conceived as a celebration of community, movement and musical freedom, and it is the artist’s most fully realised project to date. It marks the start of a new creative phase and cements Marla Kether’s reputation as one of the most notable cross-disciplinary figures in the UK underground.
