The young Swiss guitarist Louis Matute plays music usually filed under jazz but one that resists strict boundaries: his earlier albums carried cinematic and post-rock colors as well as world music influences. His new album The World is Stable Now goes further, as Matute builds an imaginary world of his own, inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, in which Marco Polo serves as narrator. The record is steeped in images of great expeditions: the invitation to set out, the waiting, and the wonder of arrival. The track titles point the same way: “Forest of Pipes,” “The Musicians Hide Among the Tombs,” “Metropolis of Grey Stone.” Matute’s guitar moves in a spiral like that of the Belgian Mocke, turning the fretboard into a runway; producer Robin Girod compares it to the lead character of a film who doesn’t yet know the script. The compositions feel like proposals or liquid sculptures: notes tumble with childlike carelessness across post-apocalyptic soundscapes, distant melodies invite dancing in the rain, and the sound, with its distinctive grain, limpid yet mysterious textures, echoes and reminiscences, becomes the guitar’s travel companion. It is an album in which one can get lost and still feel that a refuge has been found.
