Boston musician Sean Coleman, a songwriter, producer, singer and guitarist who spent decades quietly honing his craft in the classic-rock cover band The Bleeding Hearts, is launching his own project, the Sean Coleman Project. Its debut single You’ve Got To Choose arrives on August 21, 2026, and the collaborative debut album Apropos of Nothing is due in October. The song tells of a woman who discovers her lover’s infidelity and issues an ultimatum, though the choice she offers is not the one he expected. Conceived as a gospel song, it revealed its gritty blues character along the way. Coleman wrote it specifically for the voice of Mia Boostrom, a Dighton native and contestant on The Voice and America’s Got Talent, so that the emotion builds across three verses. The arrangement is deliberately sparse (guitars, drums, bass and organ) to leave room for the vocal. He aimed to evoke the style of Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi.Title: Apropos of Nothing

Four guitarists play on the track: Andrew Gravel (lead solo), Bill Danylik, Sam Crawford and Coleman himself, along with Brad Goff (Hammond organ), Sean McLaughlin (bass) and Mike Levesque (drums). McLaughlin produced the song at his 37' Productions studio in Rockland, and Jeff Lipton mastered it at Peerless Mastering with assistant Costanza Tinti.
Apropos of Nothing is deliberately not tied to a single style: from a core of classic rock, blues and Americana it branches out into gospel, soul, folk, jazz and country. Coleman grew up in the 1970s, when AM radio played Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Steely Dan, Curtis Mayfield, Linda Ronstadt and The Allman Brothers back to back, and he wants to recapture that spirit without genre barriers. His taste was shaped by his parents’ record collection, from show tunes and The Beatles to Miriam Makeba, Pete Seeger, The Beach Boys and B.B. King. Elisa Smith and Cody Nilsen of GA-20 also appear on the album.
The project’s roots go back to the pandemic, when Coleman first began writing original music. The Bleeding Hearts recorded the concept album I Am In Here (2022) with disability rights activist Elizabeth Bonker, who is non-verbal due to autism and wrote the lyrics. It featured a guest appearance by Tom Morello on “Silent Cage” and drew around a quarter-million streams on Spotify. Afterwards Coleman took a songwriting workshop led by producer and musicologist Rick Beato. His stated goal is music that brings people together instead of sorting them into tribes: songs to dance to with joy, and songs that help people face their deepest sorrows and know they are not alone.
