This E.P. is built from songs by Richard “Dick” Gendall (1924–2017), a Cornish linguist, professor, pioneer of the Cornish language revival, musician and writer. Over his lifetime he wrote hundreds of songs for the Cornish singer Brenda Wootton. Two of them, “Silver Net” and “Theft of the Mackerel Shoals” (originally written and released as “Rape of the Mackerel Shoals”), appeared on her 1979 album “Carillion”. Two others, “Poor Cousin Jack” and “Boat for Sale,” were never performed or recorded by Brenda Wootton, so they are heard here for the first time. The fifth track, “Smoking Chimneys,” is by the performer who recorded the E.P., who wrote it in 2010. The songs’ themes are as relevant as ever: the effects of second-home ownership and the pressure of large-scale trawling on Cornish fishing communities have become clearer with each passing year, and both issues are again prominent in the media. The project was made with the support of Jan Gendall.Title: Richard Gendall's Cornish Protest Songs
