Tian Qiyi - Jazz Mantras (2026) [Hi-Res]

Jazz Mantras is a duo album that reworks jazz compositions through the way the musicians naturally play together. As they worked through the material, they were drawn more and more toward the spiritual side of jazz: chanting, repetition and the space between sounds.

The sound grows out of their live performances. The bass becomes a continuous, chant- or mantra-like part that drives the music from underneath, while the erhu, morin khuur, yangqin and percussion play above it. In the studio this became heavy bass, repetition, space and delays, giving the music a fluidity and openness akin to the aesthetic of the Axiom label.

The album alternates between raw, intense passages and slower, atmospheric, hypnotic ones. The duo also chose to revisit Incantation, recording a new version of the piece.
