Paavali Jumppanen began his career in the most unusual way: recording the three complex piano sonatas of Pierre Boulez with the composer's praise. After a few years he recorded the most interesting integral of Beethoven's 32 Sonatas of the last years, demonstrating an exuberant technique allied to a scale of dynamics rarely heard. And now this fantastic pianist presents us with the entirety of Debussy's 24 Preludes at a rarely achieved level. His pianissimos arrive at a level of subtlety never before heard (Canope's end for example) and citing the critic of Gramophone magazine "I do not know another 'Cathédrale engloutie' whose architectural splendor is more thrillingly glimpsed the sunlight penetrates water's gently shifting prism ... ". Very few pianists have achieved such a feat. In these Debussy Preludes Paavali Jumppanen achieves the excellence, in my opinion, of the greatest: Michelangeli, Ciani, Zimerman and Paul Jacobs. By the way Paul Jacobs was also an excellent contemporary music pianist. Debussy demonstrates just how modern it is in the hand of pianists fleeing from the standard repertoire. With this double CD Jumpannen puts himself safely as one of the greatest pianists of our time. Wonderful achievement. Ops: Almost forgot: also the Children's Corner version is of the same high level.
