"Young players today are very courageous," says Brian Lynch, referring to the qualities that 20-year-old trumpeter Philip Dizack and his ensemble display on "Beyond a Dream", Dizack's recorded debut, on which Lynch served as a valued advisor.
"They're using everything-straight-ahead and Latin, even Indian and Middle Eastern musics," Lynch continues. "They use scientific frameworks for their music, complicated mathematical ways of shaping their material. The scene is a challenge for them, because there are no longer people like Art Blakey or Horace Silver who function as individual academies. You have to come out strong, and make your own way."
All the participants on Dizack's impressive opening salvo -only one is older than 23 - fit Lynch's description. They present an expansive recital, authoritatively navigating diverse environments with nuance, soulfulness, and a command of blues expression.
