The human brain is an imperfect storage device. The information we recall is colored by emotions and is subject to our own, often unwitting, revisions. We can remember some facts with relative clarity, but our interpretations of those facts are different. This is an unavoidable effect of consciousness and, if it didn't have such horrifying repercussions (due the outsized influence of the human animal on Earth), it may be little more than a minor annoyance.
