Julieta Venegas - Si (2003)

It's a bit jarring to see Mexican alt-rockera Julieta Venegas posed demurely in a wedding dress, against a pink background, on the cover of Si. Inside, the 10-track disc reflects the sugary switch, offering sweet pop arrangements and wide-eyed musings on love. Venegas' last two albums, Aqui and Bueninvento, were moodier, more introspective affairs. Savvy marketing move? Maybe, but it's given Venegas the most successful, most accessible album of her career thus far. Si is an irresistible valentine of an album, anchored by Venegas' heartfelt vocal delivery and quirky musical choices, from pop and disco to reggae and hip-hop. Songs like "Lento, Andar Conmigo and Algo Esta Cambiando" sparkle especially brightly. Venegas may still be searching for a defining sound, but listening to her take the journey on Si is sure to put a smile on a listener's face.
