The Brighton-based songwriter Ellie Ford offers on her second album together with her band an interesting counter-design to the general folk pop junk, with which the trained harpist has been associated. Because there is an absolutely unusual art-pop-mix with jazzy touch and folk-elements to admire, where an unusual instrumentation, complex song structures and Ellies are almost merged into a melange with the singing melodies. Between Ellie's voice, her harp, Andrew Stuart-Buttle's violin and Freya Bowe's clarinet, there are sound combinations and possibilities that one would neither have expected nor sought for. No question: In times like these, where everything wants to be sorted into drawers, such an approach is somehow brave and refreshing.
