Seawind - Remember (1995)

A unique and underrated band that specialized in soul, funk and jazz fusion, Seawind enjoyed a small following in the late 1970s and early '80s, but was never as well known as it deserved to be. Uniting material from the Hawaiian outfit's first two albums, Seawind (1977) and Window of a Child (1978), with five previously unreleased songs from 1981, this CD (released in 1995) shows how much this Hawaiian band and its expressive lead singer Pauline Wilson had going for them. "We Got a Way" and "You Gotta Be Willing to Lose" are fine examples of the type of sweaty, Tower of Power-influenced funk Seawind played so well, while instrumentals like "Campanas de Invierno" and "Roadways" exemplify its memorable contributions to jazz fusion. Some of the songs that weren't included on this CD (such as the jazz gem "Wings of Love" and the funk smoker "Make Up Your Mind") would have been better choices than the 1981 rarities, but even so, Remember shows us how impressive Seawind's contributions were.
