Featuring an all-star band of long-time collaborators led by jazz legends Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart

Now approaching the 50th anniversary of Coltrane's passing, 'Compassion' is a fitting tribute to his legacy. Featuring an all-star band of long-time collaborators led by jazz legends Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart.

In spring of 2007, saxophonist Dave Liebman was contacted by the BBC asking to arrange a recording date commemorating the 40th anniversary of John Coltrane's passing. Due to prior commitments, he could not get the whole Saxophone Summit group together, but with Summit-mates Joe Lovano, Billy Hart and Phil Markowitz, supported by bassist Ron McClure they were able to do a recording session.

Coltrane compositions recorded cover the various periods of Trane's life with the early period represented by the altered blues "Locomotion," mid period ethnic-influenced "Olé" and "Equinox." The later years represented by the rarely heard "Reverend King" and "Compassion" from the epic Meditations album. With Joe Lovano featured on flute, tenor, aulachrome (a new saxophone innovation) and alto flute, along with Dave Liebman on soprano and flutes, the music explores Coltrane's legacy with a modern coloristic approach.

Recorded on June 22, 2007 at the legendary Clinton Recording Studios in NYC for BBC Radio 3's program Jazz on 3, a Somethin' Else Production Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Coltranes Passing on July 17, 1967
