Brazilian pianist Alex Corrêa and Russian trumpeter Alex Sipiagin are among the most formative jazz musicians in their home countries. The two got to know each other in Groningen, where Corrêa took lessons from Sipiagin and raves about this encounter to this day. The Hamburg audience has known Alex Corrêa since last summer at the latest. At the "Hamburg Jazz Open" festival in Planten un Blomen, he made a celebrated appearance alongside the trombone legend Raúl de Souza.
In the LARGE SOUNDS series, the “Concerto para Piano e Universo” composed by Alex Corrêa - a piano concert embedded in its own sonic universe, that of a big band, is celebrating its European premiere. In addition to Corrêa, trumpeter Alex Sipiagin will also play with the jazz combine, whose musical vita could hardly be more sonorous. As the winner of the prestigious Monk competition, he was on stage with Maria Schneider, the Gil Evans Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band. For many years, Sipiagin has also taught at several well-known music schools and conservatories in Europe. In the Netherlands, Alex and Alex had a crucial meeting for this project - Corrêa took hours at Spiagin. So now a Brazilian and a Russian are playing jazz together. An unusual but by no means unnatural combination.
Rhythmically inspired by the native Brazilian sounds, Corrêa also manages to write intellectually demanding pieces that don't have to sound complicated! Coupled with Sipiagin's solo skills, this results in an exciting and inspiring mix of sounds.
The jazz combine is arranged and conducted by the Hamburg trombonist Christophe Schweizer. He has played with both Alex ’and is on the journey with the young big band for the second time this year to explore a musical universe in the LARGE SOUNDS series. The next exceptional musicians will follow Billy Hart in December - a rousing evening in the resonance room is waiting!
