Mathias Algotsson Trio - New Traditions (2009)

New Traditions contains Algotsson's interpretations of Swedish traditional melodies (folk songs and hymns) and original compositions. The affinity between Swedish songs and jazz has been demonstrated by Stan Getz, who popularized "Dear Old Stockholm," Art Farmer (To Sweden With Love), and Jan Lundgren (Swedish Standards and Landscapes), among others.

Algotsson's arrangements of the traditionals underscore the beauty of the original melodies while turning them into credible and enjoyable jazz performances. His seven originals meld seamlessly with other songs, and he creates an interesting effect by combining the secular and sacred, as well as jazz and classical elements. The trio's performance is impressive, with Calle Rasmusson adding vivid colors with his percussion work. In addition to his wonderful piano playing, Algotsson switches to organ on a few tunes. Guest clarinetist Magnus Lindgren joins the trio on "Valse Petit."

The quality of the recording is also superb. Recommended for fans of top quality piano jazz!
