Allegra Krieger - Circles (2017)

Now, this is beautiful. Allegra Krieger is a folk singer-songwriter from Brooklyn. Her track ‘Circles’ is a considered, experimental, and emotional approach to folk which sees her incorporate self-reflective lyrics, avant-garde musical flourishes, and an approach to melody that is reminiscent, but not derivative, of Joni Mitchell.

There is something experienced and ancient in her performance. There is a world-weariness and weight to her music that some musicians spend a lifetime trying to imbue into their music. The issue is that it’s the kind of thing you either have or don’t have. It’s immediately arresting. It commands attention without forcing itself upon you. It simply makes you take stock and listen.
