Forget the jive cover. While Sony Latin may have designed this as a simple cash-in from some of Colombia's longest-lasting hit groups and solo artists in their stable, this volume is an all-killer, no-filler collection of popular cumbias, salsas, vallenatos, porros, rock & roll, and more. It also tells a disjointed but nonetheless compelling story about Colombian popular music as it entered the modern era from the 1970s on: that music derived from national rural sources as well as urban ones drawing directly on various folk styles would chart and sell. Some of the artists here include the tropical El Combo de las Estrellas from Medellin, Binomio de Oro de América, Grupo Niche, Los Diablitos, Juan Carlos Coronel, and cumbia accordion king Aniceto Molina. Tacked onto the end of the set is "De Madrugada," from Colombian hard rock band Ekhymosis. This is well worth the discount price and may provide -- particularly for Europeans and Americans -- a decent introduction to many of the magical sounds from Colombia.
