This 2008 remaster of 1963's LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE updates the smooth, swirling pleasure of the original with crisp, crystalline sound. Jimmy Smith's Hammond B-3 virtually defined the sound of soul-jazz, and on this live date (Smith always pushed and grooved harder in a live context) Smith wields the magic that only he and his keys are capable of creating. Smith is backed by a subtle, groove-sensitive drummer and guitarist: the trio take on Ray Charles's "I Got a Woman," the beautiful ballad "If I Were a Bell," and the standard "Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey." Smith peels off some remarkable solos, and the whole affair is elegant and soulful.
