The house that founder Bill Curtis built, the Fatback Band (or just plain Fatback as they became in 1982), has sometimes been a 6-piece and sometimes anything up to a 9-piece band. Their records for Spring and Event are classics of the 70s and '80s dance scene, packed with "party" atmosphere, undoubtedly aided by the "live" feel that the band induced by always having an audience at their recording sessions. 14 Karat came out in 1980, a year after the band cut what is regarded as the first rap record King Tim III (Personality Jock), and it contains two Top 100 hits Let's Do It Again and Angel.
