BUDDY FO is the New Hawaii — the Hawali of Today. His music is Today's Music, bringing new zest to the charm and fun of the Islands.
Buddy was born in Maui. After high school, he worked as a duo with his cousin, the late Kui Lee. When Kul's songwriting career took off like a meteor, Buddy formed a group, and toured with the Kingston Trio, and Peter, Paul and Mary. He was also featured with the original Martin Denny band.
The Buddy Fo group today combines the old Hawaii with the most contemporary sound. They've appeared with Don Ho at the world famous Greek Theatre in Hollywood, at the new International Hotel in Las Vegas (Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand were other opening headliners), and they are right now on tour throughout the other mainland United States.
This album was recorded “Live” one night in Minnesota. Can you picture a troup of Hawaiian musicians in white pants, aloha shirts and bare feet experiencing for the first time in their lives, the rare delights of three feet of snow? The exhilaration which that induced carried over inside into the wonderful show that followed — and it's all captured here in this “live” recording.
Buddy feels that traditional Hawaiian music is beautiful, and never more so than when enhanced with modern sounds unlimited. Says Buddy: "There are no grass shacks in today's Hawall. Why should there be any in Hawaiian music?” Buddy and his group are just the musicians who can shake up the old grass shacks.
