Andy LaVerne - Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Vol. 28 (1993)

The Maybeck Recital Hall series has given many post-bop pianists a rare opportunity to record solo. Andy LaVerne, who is normally heard with trios, sounds surprisingly comfortable in the solo setting. His performances on this date are rhapsodic and occasionally wandering as he performs nine standards, Chick Corea's "Impressions for Piano," and his own "Stan Getz in Chappaqua." LaVerne reharmonizes the better-known songs and by often adding vamps he makes some of the music dark and faintly disturbing, even "Melancholy Baby" and "When You Wish Upon a Star." This is an interesting set of creative jazz.
