Joanie Pallatto, who (with pianist/producer Bradley Parker-Sparrow) founded and runs Southport (one of the top Midwest jazz record labels), has a versatile and very jazz-oriented style. Her scatting sometimes recalls Sheila Jordan; she has a strong voice for ballads and her adventurous spirit allows her to tackle material ranging from "In a Mellow Tone" (during which she interacts quite successfully with tenor saxophonist Von Freeman), "All Blues," "Blue in Green" (for which she wrote the lyrics), and "Save Your Love for Me" to Bob Dorough's "Nothing Like You." Other highlights include Sparrow's "Live" which, in addition to solos from the composer's thunderous piano (a bit reminiscent of Don Pullen) and trumpeter Brad Goode, has some close harmony and hot scatting by Pallatto and April Alosio, a duet with bassist John Whitfield on a pleading "Get out of Town," and an Ellington tribute, "Looking for Duke." With the other musicians including pianist Willie Pickens and drummer Robert Shy, this is a particularly memorable effort.~Scott Yanow
